Song Recital for Mezzo-soprano and Strings
For this unique recital, Rebecca Martin went in search of works for voice accompanied by string quartet. Johann Wolfgang Goethe described the music of string quartets as "4 sensible people conversing"; the conversation reaches another level with the added vocal line and texts. The program includes Samuel Barber's mysterious, lyric piece Dover Beach, Ernest Chausson's Chanson perpétuelle, and Il tramonto (The Sunset), by Ottorino Respighi. Also more familiar songs by Franz Schubert and Gustav Mahler---arranged for voice with strings and piano---will round out the recital.
