Rückert Songs of Gustav Mahler
"Vienna 1900" on October 17,2024
This concert series, "Visions", marking the 150th birthday of Arnold Schönberger, spans four concerts and 150 years, and begins with the opening concert "Vienna 1900". The musical atmosphere of change at the turn of the century that shaped the total development of modern music will be brought to the listeners. This evening concert with violin, viola, cello, piano, and voices will present works of Brahms, Zemlinsky, and Mahler, who were all important models for Schönberg. All these chamber works are from Vienna around 1900, including both classics and rarities such as Schönberg's "Brettl Songs", which will be performed by the soprano Minka Teepe. This aspect of Schönberg as a witty composer of cabaret songs show a side of the composer that many do not know!
Mezzosoprano Rebecca Martin will sing Mahler's famous "Rückert Songs", in a rare setting with violin, cello, viola, and piano. The Schönberg expert Ulrich Krämer will moderate the program with interesting tidbits and anecdotes.
